Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal

Keeping it Reel is a regular image section celebrating ‘Pictures of You’ – the lived experience of women and all the smile lines it generates. It quietly challenges the mass media’s construction of ‘beauty’ and its so-called ‘industry’. In other words, an “up yours” to the nipped, tucked, barbie-mimicking, photoshop-frenzied images that saturate our world.

Our September image is of Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal, currently featuring in Helium Productions’ new contemporary dance work ‘Opal Vapour’ at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre. The image was captured by Georgia Fox from Like A Fox PR. Opal Vapour is a new contemporary dance work that explores cleansing for purification and a deep sense of belonging to a place of birth. Created across two countries – Australia and Indonesia – the performance draws on ritual elements of Javanese Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry.
