Let Fly in July

18 / 07 / 2013

G’day and welcome to Sheilas July Edition – exactly a year since we published our very first edition.

And what a month it has been, with Australia losing its first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard. To get an insight into why, check out the extract from Kerry Anne-Walsh’s timely book, ‘The Stalking of Julia Gillard‘, which looks at the last three years in Australia’s political history.

Three years that have, in the last three weeks, been wiped from our political landscape, as this month’s Polly Ticks column shows, and which our resident cartoonist Judy Horacek starkly reminds us of with one of her ‘classics’. Also in this edition:

– Emily Lee-Ack provides an important reflection on research looking at the availability of family planning services in regional and rural areas.

Lucas Smith looks into the life and work of poet Barbara Baynton

Robert Brown examines the sexist undertones of hip-hop culture

Melissa Sanders shares a delightful ‘awww’ photo of her friend Kate Shannon and baby Beatrice

– And our Bonza Sheila is the remarkable feminist presenter, writer and organiser Karen Pickering.

On that note, stay tuned for an exciting new little Victorian Women’s Trust project – featuring all our Bonza Sheila interviews reproduced in a hardcopy publication, to be developed just in time to squeeze into your Christmas stockings 🙂 Stay tuned for more details.

Best,

Sarah Capper
