December (and Jan) Ed

23 / 12 / 2013

G’day All,

Bumper edition of Sheilas for Summer!

We publish some fantastic contributors in the last edition for the year (and for January, as we’re taking a teeny tiny break – we’ll be back in Feb).  But in between now and then, there’s lots to read!

In our news section we publish Tanja Kovac who gives us a great rundown on the state of play with abortion law reform. And Amy Gray (new to Sheilas, but who we hope will become a regular) writes about the Federal Government’s announced cuts to child care workers and why this presents a disturbing message to women.

Also in this edition:

– Polly Ticks gives us a Round Up of Memorable (and not-so-memorable – actually, best forgotten) quotes and moments of 2013.

– A Classic Christmas Horacek (thank Judy, love it), and a Seasons Greetings pic from the Victorian Women’s Trust (publisher of Sheilas) in Keeping it Reel.

– An AWESOME First Person Feminist Christmas Wishlist by the brilliant Clementine Ford, and in Culture Club Beth Nokes let’s us know why we all love Jennifer Lawrence (true).

– And our Bonza Sheila is Kerry-Anne (KA) Walsh, long-term journalist and author of The Stalking of Julia Gillard and new-found friend of ours!

Some terrific reading – HUGE thanks to all those involved to end Sheilas for the year on a high note. And many thanks to all the contributors over 2013 – we’re into our second year of this publication and it’s been fantastic to reach a growing audience by publishing top-shelf contributors – which is just what we set out to do.

Many thanks from me to all at the Victorian Women’s Trust for your fabulous support – notably the Board and Mary Crooks (who provides pivotal assistance in vetting story ideas and content with me each month, and is always a steady sounding board on any crazy issue I wish to write about in the Monthly Mail), but I also couldn’t pull off Sheilas without the support of staff – namely my Communications support officers – Elisabeth Morgan who was with us until recently, and now Beth Nokes who joins our little team – great help indeed. Thanks also to others in the office who have been calm supports on deadline days and provided critical support to me (Georgie Proud, I’m looking at you).

Wishing all a safe and happy festive season. As said, we’ll be taking a break in January but back in February for a big 2014! Cheers and many thanks for reading.

ps. I am only including this photo of me at the VWT Christmas party last weekend because I have been told to (thanks Mary). It was taken during a really critical BBQ-ing moment in which the vegan sausages exploded and you can view my distress (I’m a Queenslander and, as such, am proud of my BBQ-ing abilities. Still, I heard they tasted ok).
