Ed’s Note June – Vale Joan Kirner

25 / 06 / 2015

Welcome to June Sheilas! This month’s edition is dedicated to the late, physician great Joan Kirner AC, who passed away earlier this month. A long-time leading light of feminism and social justice, dear friend of the Women’s Trust, Victoria’s first female Premier and an exemplar of women’s style of leadership, Joan will be sorely missed. Today, we re-publish Joan’s star turn as Bonza Sheila, and reflect anew on the wit and wisdom of one of our best. On the broad theme of women in leadership, Ruby Hamad takes a fresh look at the treatment of Gillian Triggs, in the context of a federal government determinedly chipping away at democratic principles and due process. Karen Pickering reviews The Killing Season, noting the inherent and toxic strain of masculinity that permeates the Australian political sphere. Our work experience student Stella Bridie talks about the sexist smears that serve as a subtle warning to women and girls with leadership aspirations. As always, Judy Horacek nails it with a very clever cartoon.
