The Mission #8

30 / 07 / 2015

July’s Keeping it Reel kind of isn’t. That’s the point really. It comes from a collection of works by artist Michael Cook entitled The Mission. They capture a romanticised and artificially staged depiction of one young women’s journey to ‘The Mission’ – state administered centres of supposed safety and support for Aboriginal people. Safety from a genocidal colonisation by the very architects of that genocide, and too often to a life of semi-slavery, dehumanising conditions and their children being stolen away. Fierce and brave and beautiful, ‘Ronda, 16 years’ stares out from this shot, giving us pause to ponder the life she lead, by dint of the colour of her skin. Cook’s work subverts the staged, and hints at the real, secret history of early Australia.
