Our Voice Their Safety – Hear Her Story. Raise Your Voice.

13 / 05 / 2016

This month for Keeping It Reel, we have decided to share a video that is part of a campaign recently launched by the Victorian Women’s Trust, Our Voice Their Safety. The Our Voice Their Safety initiative seeks to sheds light on the experiences of women in detention and through our Six Point Safety Plan, provides a blueprint for a better way.

As a ceaseless women’s advocate and grant-maker focused on addressing the causes of gender based violence, the Victorian Women’s Trust can no longer remain silent about this abuse on our watch. Stories like Ubuh’s must be told.

The video features the story of Ubuh,* a woman seeking asylum who came to Australia desperate to be safe. She had been imprisoned in her home country, threatened with abuse, and left without assistance. Instead of taking her in, our government put her in detention in Nauru. Like many other women in detention, Ubuh wasn’t safe, and her ordeal, far from over.

The Victorian Women’s Trust is compelled to make safety a priority, joining with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP), and Refugee Advocacy Network as well as many organisations and concerned citizens supporting safe refuge for people seeking asylum.

Share Ubah’s story and raise your voice for a safer future.

We encourage you to share this video on your social media platforms, and encourage others to head to the Our Voice Their Safety website to find out how you can support people seeking asylum with us.
